About
Alexander Michael's is a beloved historic tavern nestled in Charlotte's vibrant 4th Ward neighborhood at 401 West 9th Street. Housed in the Crowell-Berryhill Store building, which originally opened in 1897, this American tavern carries over a century of local history within its walls. The establishment was almost demolished during the neighborhood's deterioration in the 1960s and 70s but was saved and refurbished by Cullie and Sylvia Tarleton before opening as Alexander Michael's in January 1983. The bar and back bar were crafted from solid oak doors that once belonged to Charlotte's first skyscraper, the Independence Building at Trade and Tryon Streets, while the beer cooler dates back to 1920 from a local grocery store. Owner Steve Casner has been part of the family since 1983, serving as General Manager from 1983-2005 before becoming Owner/Operator in 2005. The tavern offers simple, fresh, well-prepared American fare with excellent value, complemented by a curated selection of beers, wines, and spirits. The atmosphere embodies a European pub charm with Southern hospitality, attracting both locals and visitors seeking an authentic neighborhood tavern experience. Please note that Alexander Michael's operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations, and on weekend nights, the entire party must be present before being seated. Open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch from 11 AM to 3 PM and dinner from 3 PM to 10 PM.
